Native Plants for Winged Companions

Gardens bring delight to gardeners, visitors, and people passing by. They can also provide important habitat for birds, bees, butterflies and other winged insects that bring your landscape to life with activity. Native plants provide the best enticement for seasonal and year-round residents. Whether you have a small urban space or several acres, discover and learn about 15 native plants that attract and best serve our winged companions by providing adequate sources of food, water, nesting sites and shelter. Amy Witt is the founder and director of Earth Walkers, based in Cape Elizabeth, which provides nature-based educational programs, event planning and garden consulting services. She is also a Maine Master Naturalist and horticulturist with many years of experience developing, coordinating and providing educational programs and events in Southern Maine.
