Geocaching 101

Geocaching is a fun, easy way to get exercise for your body and your mind! If you have a smartphone, you can geocache. In the 1st class, we will go over all the symbols, acronyms, types of geocaches and how to log them. There’s a whole world of geocaching information waiting to be discovered but we’ll make it easy for you. For the 2nd class, students will meet in the parking lot outside of the Gorham Adult Education office and from there head out and discover a local cache. Amy Farwell has 10 years of geocaching experience; she has placed and maintained over 25 geocaches in Southern Maine. 2 classes – Wednesday, 5/1, 6:00pm-7:00pm, and Saturday 5/4, 10:00am-12:00pm. The Wedneday class will meet in a classroom at GMS. The Saturday class will meet in the parking lot outside of the Gorham Adult Education Office. Course Fee: $10

Introduction to Recreational Kayaking - Session I

Come learn the essential skills and knowledge the novice kayaker or “never been before but always wanted to try it” paddler needs for recreational kayaking. In this 3 hour on-the-water instruction, we will cover a variety of kayaking fundamentals from safety equipment, rescue techniques, smooth entering and exiting, weather and water conditions and more. Learn the basic types of kayaks and how to select the one that is best for you. Co-owners of Sebago Trails Paddling Company, Bill and daughter Katelyn, have over 30 years of paddling experience and instruction between them. Kayaks, paddles and PFD’s for all on-the-water instruction will be provided. Class limit: 12. After the classes each student is invited to join our meetup group, Windham Raymond Paddling Club. This club schedules paddle meetups about once a week from April to October, each time at a different local launch site. There is no cost to join this group. Want to try the fastest-growing paddle sport in the nation? Here is a great opportunity for the novice SUP-er or “never been before but always wanted to try it” paddler. Come learn the essential skills and knowledge you need for Stand-Up Paddling, on boards especially designed for ease of use and learning. In this one-day, on-the-water instruction, we will cover the basics of SUP’s, types of boards, getting on and off, basic paddle strokes and essential safety issues. Then there will be plenty of time to practice in a quiet, flat water environment. SUP’s, paddles and PFD’s for all on-the-water instruction will be provided. Class limit 12. Participants must be at least 17 years of age. Pranayama, or yogic breathing, is a fantastic way to recharge the mind, release stress, and increase energy & mental clarity. We’ll begin with a Pranayama practice - you’ll learn alternate nostril breathing as well as some warming and cooling breaths. Each practice has specific physical and emotional benefits, which we'll talk briefly about. Yoga Nidra, or sleep with a trace of awareness, is the state of consciousness between waking and sleeping. I will guide you through a meditation and a practice of conscious relaxation. Lana Fortier is a certified Yoga Nidra Guide, Level II Reiki Practitioner, Pranayama & Meditation Teacher as well as a Level One Thai Yoga Bodyworker. You will leave at the end of class feeling more relaxed with a calm peace of mind.
