Bridge to College Transitions for English Language Learners is a 15 week, 67.5 hour class, open to students who are at levels 4 and 5, The goal of the class is to help increase your knowledge of English grammar, writing, reading, and speaking. It is not a conversation class, even though there will be lots of discussion about the texts that we read. You will read non-fiction from around the world. There is a heavy focus on grammar and beginner writing. It requires a commitment as the course is progressive in its content. Goal setting and career guidance is facilitated. This course is a requirement for the College Transitions program unless proficiency to the C level of the CCR standards can be demonstrated.

This 15 week course introduces students to the college environment and provides opportunities to strengthen the skills necessary for success at the college level. Students will explore the learning process, learning styles and student development theory. The final segment of the course will help students understand and successfully manage life and career transitions. Successfully complete this course and receive 3 elective credits from SMCC.

College Transitions for English Language Learners is a 13 week, 125 hours designed to prepare English Language Learners for the academic rigor of reading and writing at the college level. Content includes instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in academic content areas, with a focus on developing college entrance academic skills as well as college success skills. The focus in this course will be on research reading and writing. The expectation is that you will already know how to write a basic essay, but need to learn some advanced strategies on how to craft a longer more complex essay that is college ready. There will be a focus on non-fiction with a particular focus on American Historical documents. We will build on the grammar studied in the Pre-College Transitions class. Goal setting and career guidance is facilitated.

The Maine College Transitions Program (MTC) is a comprehensive program of study leading to enrollment and success in a post secondary education. Our program provides career and college advising, help with college and financial aid applications, time management and study skills. Accuplacer testing and, depending on your skills, basic math, Algebra and college reading and writing. With successful completion of MCT, you should be able to enter college ready for college level classes. MCT provides high-quality, cost-effective and accessible pathways to post-secondary education for adults. The Maine College Transitions Program (MCTP) is open to all adults who want to go to college or return to college. MCTP helps you through every step of the process. Gorham’s MCT program is part of a 3-school district collaboration. Students may take courses at SAD# 6 (Bonny Eagle), Scarborough and Gorham. We offer: Free Accuplacer testing Remedial math and reading courses If your Accuplacer scores show that you need to take a remedial course, take it at Gorham Adult Education. You will save travel time and lots of money taking them in your own community.
