Our Classes

Open Studio: Ceramics Handbuilding and Throwing: PM Session V

$140
Calendar May 1, 2025 at 5 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Open studio is offered for those who are interested in using our space and materials to make clay work independently from a class and is available for use only by those who have taken at least one ceramics class at our studio or for those with prior experience that has been approved by the studio manager. Open studio members can choose to handbuild, throw on the wheel, or both! Registration will include 25 pounds of clay, use of wheels and tools, a storage shelf, and the glazing and firing of work made in that month. All clay must be purchased through Gorham Arts Alliance and all firings will be done by the studio manager. You are welcome to purchase your own cone 5/6 glazes to use in firings if you want something other than what is provided. All classes are held at the Art and Nature Center at Tannery Brook. 

PM Session V: 4 classes, Thursdays, 5/1-5/22, 5:00pm-8:00pm, $140

Additional, optional work time will be offered for open studio members and current students on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays 10am-1pm and Fridays from 5pm-8pm. Members are welcome to attend as many or as few times during the week as they choose, but Thursdays will be the only day where there is guaranteed space. The extra, optional work time is first come, first serve for available wheel use and table space. The studio will be closed on federal holidays.

Upcycled Mobiles and Stabiles - Art and Motion in Balance

Calendar May 6, 2025 at 5 pm, runs for 1 week

Come learn how Alexander Calder created his famous kinetic sculptures, also known as mobiles and stabiles. Choose among sea shells, pieces of driftwood, or feathers to create a relaxing, balanced piece of art that moves and shifts in the slightest air currents. All materials included. If you have a favorite pair of needle nosed pliers with wire cutters feel free to bring them along. Chris Toy is a retired Maine educator, cooking instructor, author, and Registered Maine Guide. He enjoys beach combing, where he finds his craft supplies. He creates rustic upcycled crafts by combing the coastline for driftwood, beach stone, and recycled wire from political signs. His work can be viewed on Facebook at Acadian Driftwood Arts.

Portrait Painting in Acrylic or Oil

Calendar May 13, 2025 at 10 am, runs for 5 weeks

Practice painting portraits in your choice of acrylic or oil. This class will introduce color theory, color mixing, and the use of color to create a sense of space. We will explore painting from observation and photographs, as well as from color exercises learning from the works of artists past and contemporary. It is recommended that students have taken a portrait or life drawing class previously or are comfortable with their observational drawing skills. Instructor: Sophie Roblin. Materials included. All classes are held at the Art and Nature Center at Tannery Brook.

Wildflower Walk – Tannery Brook Preserve

Did you know that Jack in the Pulpits can change their sex? Or that a Trout Lily have spotted leaves that resemble trout? Are you curious to learn more about the wildflowers and trees that make their home in the Maine woods? Meet the native wildflowers and trees along the trails at Tannery Brook Preserve.  Our outing will incorporate plant folklore, identification, and the gifts each plant has to share. Amy is passionate about nature, plants, and all things connected to Mother Earth.  Officially, she's a Naturalist, Garden Coach, Horticulturist, Educator, and the enthusiastic Nature Spirit guided, Director of  Earth Walkers (www.earthwalkers.me).

Ukulele for Beginners Session IV

Join the ukulele revolution! Here's your chance to learn how to play this wonderfully versatile, go-anywhere instrument in our no-stress program for beginners. There are four classes in all, one each week on Zoom. Bring a ukulele, your sense of humor, passion for music, and curiosity about playing. Once you master the basics, you won't want to stop. Will you be recruited to perform at Carnegie Hall?  Well, not right away. But, as the saying goes, 'The best player isn't the person who can pick or strum the most notes. It isn't the person with the greatest technical skill. It's the person who can touch the most hearts.' So grab a uke, you don't need to read music - sign up, tune up and show up. If you don't own a ukulele, please get in touch with us for helpful information about buying one (uketime24@gmail.com). Let your musical journey begin! Duncan Perry, a multi-instrumentalist, has played ukulele for over 14 years. He is a popular and experienced teacher and performer who offers classes up and down the Southern coast of Maine.

First Aid

The First Aid class includes medical emergencies, bleeding that you can see, bleeding you cannot see, treating for shock, and how and when to call emergency services. The course cost includes a blend of PowerPoint and video, instructor and practical components, and a certificate of completion. This class is taught to the standards established by the American Heart Association. The workbook is not included in this class. If you would like a workbook, please indicate on your registration form (one workbook covers CPR and first aid). The cost is $10 for the book, payable to the instructor.

Moss Wall Art

Join us for an evening of DIY fun where each participant will make a beautiful piece of living art.  We will make a moss wall art that each person will get to leave with that day. This class is meant for beginners.  All tools, instructions, and materials will be waiting for you when you arrive. A $20 material fee is to be paid in cash on the night of your class. Melissa started her jewelry business, Gem Lounge Jewelry, in 2009 and is a proud 8th-generation Mainer, having grown up in southern Maine before attending college in New Orleans. Upon graduation, Ms. Evans moved back to New England, eventually settling back in her beloved state of Maine and finding inspiration for her creations all around. While her roots in Maine keep her grounded in the beautiful state, wanderlust brings her on travels worldwide.

One Day Clay, Wheel Throwing (Beginner/Intermediate): Session V

In these one-day, three-hour classes, you will have the opportunity to try out the pottery wheel and get a brief introduction to our studio space and community. You will have an accelerated lesson in working with clay and wheel throwing and we will save and fire any pieces you would like to keep. One-day clay classes are perfect if you feel like you want to get a taste of pottery before committing to a full session with us or are just looking for a nice weekend activity with friends or family! All classes are held at the Art and Nature Center at Tannery Brook.
