Our Classes

First Aid

The First Aid class includes: medical emergencies, bleeding that you can see, bleeding you cannot see, treating for shock, and how and when to call emergency services. The course cost includes a blend of PowerPoint and video, instructor and practical components, and a certificate of completion. This class is taught to the standards established by the American Heart Association. The workbook is not included in this class. If you would like a workbook, please indicate on your registration form (one workbook covers CPR and first aid). Cost is $10 for the book.

Line Dancing Session II

Do you like to dance and have a good time? Come on out and give line dancing a try! This class is tons of fun and a great way to get some exercise without knowing it. We will learn choreographed dances to the newest music, some country and much more. Our class will start super simple and we will kick it up a small notch at the end for those who really like a challenge or have already done this before. No experience or partner necessary. Students are asked to wear shoes without grips on the bottom. Melissa Willemse has been dancing for more than 25 years and began to teach five years ago to share her passion with others.

Maine Driving Dynamics

Maine’s Driving Dynamics course offers all drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving abilities. This five-hour course will include a discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine’s highways. Students completing the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record. A certified Maine Driving Dynamics instructor teaches this course.

Edible Landscaping

Have a garden that looks and tastes great! Join Master Gardener Joel Leak as he discusses different trees, shrubs, vegetables, herbs, and flowers to incorporate into an edible landscape. Whether you have limited space and want to grow produce in your front yard, or you just want to spruce up an old vegetable garden, Joel will provide plenty of ideas to add color, shapes, texture, and of course, flavor to your garden. Joel Leak has been a Master Gardener since 2001 and has been gardening for over 50 years. He teaches Adult Education classes in vegetable gardening, fruit trees, culinary herbs, and growing berries. He lives in Falmouth where he maintains a large vegetable garden, berries bushes, fruit trees, and an incredible edible hedge.

Write On! A Creative Writing Smorgasbord

Whether you’re an English Lit dropout or a published author, this course is for you! We’ll share funny, five-minute writing prompts and personal memoir; we’ll try our hand at free style poetry and lively short stories; most of all we’ll give free rein to our inner muse and find new ways to express the old adage that “A writer writes, always.” Please bring something to write on and something to write with; handouts and related materials will be provided. Lynne Mentzer is an avid journal writer. She is certified to teach courses in Journal to Self and has led numerous writing and collage workshops. Lynne is an ordained United Methodist minister, recently retired after serving churches in Maine and New Hampshire for the past 20 years.

Open Studio: Ceramics Handbuilding and Throwing - AM Session IV

Open studio is offered for those who are interested in using our space and materials to make clay work independently from a class. Our open studio is available for use only by those who have taken at least one ceramics class at our studio or for those with prior experience that has been approved by the studio manager. Open studio members can choose to handbuild, throw on the wheel, or both! Materials will include 25 pounds of clay, the use of wheels and tools, a storage shelf, and the glazing and firing of work made in that month. All clay must be purchased through Gorham Arts Alliance and all firings will be done by the studio manager. Members are welcome to purchase their own cone 5/6 glazes to use in firings if they want something other than what is provided. All classes are held at the Art and Nature Center at Tannery Brook.

Figure Drawing-Portraits, Contours, and Costumes Session III

Join us for an introduction to drawing the human figure from a live model (both nude and draped/clothed) using a variety of art materials, techniques, and artistic approaches. The purpose is to help students obtain the basic skill of drawing the human form, including anatomy, observation of the human form, and fundamental exercises in gesture, contour, outline, and tonal modeling. Focus classes include: capturing expressions, portrait proportion, movement, hands as expression, and emotion through body language as well as some themed classes. This is a self-guided class with instructors available for assistance with technique. All classes are held at the Community Arts Center, 34 School St. Gorham. $10 material fee if needed.
